Piedras Blancas

Piedras Blancas is a coastal location located on the central coast of California. It is one of the best places to watch seals onshore. The population of elephant seals has increased significantly in recent years. In fact, more than 23,000 seals arrived at the location between 2014 and 2015.

Piedras Blancas lighthouse was originally built in 1874. The light station is still in operation today. Visitors can tour the facility and learn more about its history. Tours run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. For a $10 fee, adults can join a guided tour. Children ages six to 17 are free.

The area was first named after the white rocks offshore. These were discovered by whalers, who found that elephant seals’ blubber yielded high-quality oil. At the time, the seals were considered extinct.
